This blog is inspired by the Entrepreneur Operating System (or EOS). If you’re not familiar with EOS, it is a…
“system that helps entrepreneurs clarify their vision, gain traction and increase team health through simple, proven, practical tools.”
The book Traction outlines the concepts of the system and is written by Founder Gino Wickman. This accompanies Rocket Fuel, which looks at the Integrator Visionary duo which is a key relationship in the system.
It’s a really interesting system, and one that whether you implement as the full model, or a hybrid with other operational models provides great structure, focus and insight so it’s worth checking out.
Part of EOS is ‘Get It, Want It, Capacity To Do It (GWC)’ and I love this concept! It applies in EOS in two ways; getting the right people in the right seats to do the jobs that need doing if you’re a larger organisation (do they get it, want it and have capacity’), and encouraging business owners to do what they want and love to do, rather than not thinking and just saying yes to everything, whether they have capacity or not!
Whatever business industry you’re in, having capacity is one of the big areas that will either allow you to do your best work, or leave you feeling overburdened or that you don’t have enough time in the day to do all the things you want to do. And it is usually the latter.
Managing your capacity is what will make the biggest difference to how you work as a business owner and how the business evolves. Have the capacity to take on the work you’re good at, you want and that will move the business in the way you want.
Next time an opportunity presents itself to you; it could be a new client, collaboration or even an idea you’ve had that you’re weighing up whether to develop or not, run it through the ‘GWC’ approach.
Do you Get It?
Do you have a deep understanding of what needs to be done, and do you also understand how this will impact your business. Does it keep the balance, is it a fit to your current model and how you work?
Do you Want It?
Are you excited about it, either for your own personal development and/or who it can benefit your business? Does it play to your strengths and what you love to do the most?
Do you have the Capacity To Do It?
Do you have the talent, skills, knowledge and most importantly, time, to carry out the work?
By thinking about these three questions, you’ll get more in tune to what you (and your team if you have one) can and should be doing to make working on your business easier and more beneficial. You might not always get it right, but that’s all part of the journey!
I know from first hand experience that capacity is a huge factor in service based businesses and it is so important to manage this in a way that suits you, so you or your business don’t burn out.
If you feel up against it right now and really need to make a difference to how you’re working, and what you’re saying yes to, then let’s have a conversation that will calm your chaos.
