How Virtually Does It Grew Up

I’ve been quite reflective on my business recently. I’ve hit some pretty big milestones in the last year, and have now been running Virtually Does It for just over 10 years.

It’s fair to say I started the business without any real expectations, I wanted to see what it was like to run my own business. I had come across the VA industry which was largely only in the real estate sector in the US, and I thought I could do it so that’s what I did! No rags to riches story, just me and my laptop and a Mr Site website-out-of-the-box and a hand drawn logo that I did myself which my husband then replicated digitally using some free software we found!

I was a Senior Exec PA at the time and actually loved it. I was extremely fortunate that my career to that point had been so rewarding, working with some very driven, passionate and inspiring entrepreneurs with multi-million dollar business portfolios and highly-rated and notable Directors in the Private Sector. So this venture was going to be a side hustle, for a little while at least.

At the end of 2010 I proudly launched with the website and hand-drawn logo, and a Twitter account (Twitter was the place to be back then!), and really just waited! No digital marketing strategy, no lead magnet, no real blogging or emailing going on. Oh how simple it was back then! Or how naive I was!

My very first client found me via a random tweet with a local B&B about how to cook boiled eggs on an Aga (no, I’m not joking!), clicked on my Twitter handle, read about what I did, got in touch and after a coffee meeting later, they signed their retainer agreement for 10 hours a month on the 4th January 2011, and were with me until October 2020 when they retired.

That day I started my journey as a business owner with a real client, and I have never looked back.

The more I got involved in this new world of work, the more I loved learning everything I could about online business and how to really make what goes on behind the scenes work at its best. Shaping my skills and knowledge to be able to support business owners with more than just the traditional admin skills – I don’t think I have done a PowerPoint presentation for about 7 years now!

I grew my hands on experience in online business management and strategy, I made my first hire in 2017 to help the growing business I never really set out to have, but loved!

So from that hand drawn logo in 2010 it today….

The logo has grown up too as the business has! From the tree (the @ signs were apples, the www were the roots by the way – and I do have a love for trees!), to the ever present tick as the V of Virtually Does It. If you have worked with me you know I love a tick-list.

I now work with businesses and the people behind them from many different industries. Being able to support business visionaries make the impact they want is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. Mapping projects, goals, ideas. Building teams and seeing the business fly because of that, seeing the world become a better place because of the products and services I am helping to shape and keep going through the business ops I have put in place is amazing, and very humbling.

Hitting new financial goals personally has been scary, but very affirming that I can do it, and make it a success (anyone else find success scary?!). Why it took my 10 years to realise that, who knows! But the introvert in me isn’t one to shout from the roof tops about everything I do, but there are times, such as now, when I’m here to give myself the recognition, which we should all do more often!

So, from the keyboard of someone who started without a grand plan, without a real idea of how any of it worked, or where it would take me, I am here to tell you you can achieve great things without a plan. Just start.

You need positivity, focus and a genuine love for what you do. Be open to ideas, techniques and learn as much as you can. Implement what feels good for your business and keep going.
